About Us

The Maryland Main Street Program

The Downtown Sykesville Connection (formerly Sykesville Main Street Association) was created in 2011. It is a part of the Main Street Maryland Program. The program strives to strengthen the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and neighborhoods.

Main Street Maryland selects communities who have made a commitment to succeed and helps them improve the economy, appearance, and image of their traditional downtown business districts through the Main Street four-point approach for commercial revitalization, which is organized into the following committees:

The Downtown Sykesville Connection became a Main Street America-accredited Main Street Program in 2014.

* The Main Street Approach™ offers community-based revitalization initiatives with a practical, adaptable framework for downtown transformation that is easily tailored to local conditions. The Main Street Approach helps communities get started with revitalization, and grows with them over time.

For more than 14 years, the Downtown Sykesville Connection (formerly the Sykesville Main Street Association) has applied the Main Street Approach™ to strengthen downtown Sykesville for residents, businesses, and visitors. What began with early placemaking efforts—such as the community garden, skatepark development, public art, parklets, and farmers market—has evolved into a high-performing, data-driven Main Street program delivering measurable economic, cultural, and community impact.

In recent years, the DSC has achieved zero percent vacancy on Main Street, expanded regional tourism through signature events, earned national recognition as a 2026 Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA) semifinalist, and successfully administered state and private funding for downtown lighting, façade improvements, business support, and inclusive programming. The organization continues to manage a thriving farmers market, a robust year-round event calendar, and placemaking initiatives that reflect Sykesville’s character and values.

As an independent nonprofit, the Downtown Sykesville Connection remains committed to preserving Sykesville’s historic identity, enhancing the public realm, and creating meaningful experiences that improve quality of life while supporting a resilient local economy. Through strategic partnerships, thoughtful design, and community-centered programming, the DSC will continue to showcase Sykesville as a vibrant, welcoming small town—built for today and positioned for the future.

2026 Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency

We are proud to share that Downtown Sykesville Connection has earned the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency, the highest level of recognition offered by Candid (formerly GuideStar).

The Platinum Seal demonstrates our ongoing commitment to accountability, measurable impact, and organizational excellence. It means our financial information, leadership structure, strategic priorities, and program outcomes are publicly available — allowing donors, partners, and community members to clearly see how resources are invested to strengthen our historic downtown.

As a nationally accredited Main Street program, transparency is central to how we operate. We track both quantitative and qualitative results, measure economic impact, and continually refine our work to ensure we are delivering meaningful value to the businesses, residents, and visitors we serve.

Earning the Platinum Seal reinforces our commitment to:

  • Responsible stewardship of funds

  • Inclusive leadership and governance

  • Data-driven decision-making

  • Demonstrated economic and community impact

We are grateful to our supporters, sponsors, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible. Together, we continue building a vibrant, welcoming, and economically resilient downtown Sykesville.
